macOS Monterey, iOS 15.1 Release Date Announced

Apple today confirmed that iOS 15.1, macOS 15.1, tvOS 15.1, watchOS 8.1 and macOS Monterey will all be available as free downloads from next week.

A specific date only appears to have been given for macOS Monterey so far, however —  Mac users will be able to download the software update on Monday, October 25.

The new software updates will be required for users to take advantage of new hardware being released, specifically the new third-generation AirPods.

All of the new software updates will see the arrival of support for SharePlay, allowing users to share content experiences with family and friends for group watching sessions and more. The macOS Monterey release will also include Universal Control, a feature that will allow iPad users to share a single mouse and keyboard seamlessly. However, it appears that feature will be labeled as a beta initially.

Today’s Unleashed event also saw the debut of new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro notebooks and we can expect them to ship with macOS Monterey installed right out the gate. Those new machines pack new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, while a notch sits above their new mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR screens.

It’s been a big day for Apple and it remains to be seen whether that’s the end to its 2021 announcements — we still have a couple of months left to go!
