Next-Gen 14 And 16-Inch MacBook Pro With M1 Pro And M1 Max Are Official, Here Are The Details

Apple today announced its new line of MacBook Pro notebooks with the new 14-inch and 16-inch models now available for pre-order.

The two new notebooks come with an all-new design as well as two powerful new Apple silicon chips — the new M1 Pro and M1 Max are designed to give pro users the CPU and GPU power that they need for demanding workflows while on the move.

Alongside the new chips, Apple has also brought a new mini-LED Liquid Retina XDR display to the fold, with the rumored notch turning out to be accurate after all.

That notch gives Apple the room for the new upgraded 1080p FaceTime camera, with macOS using the space in the center of the Menu bar to hide it. Also part of the package is the ProMotion tech giving the MacBook’s display a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate.

Those two new chips are where things get most interesting, however. The M1 Pro features 10 CPU cores and up to 16 GPU cores, making it a powerful option for many.

M1 Pro takes the groundbreaking architecture of M1 to a whole new level. Featuring a powerful up-to-10-core CPU with eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, along with an up-to-16-core GPU, M1 Pro delivers up to 70 percent faster CPU performance than M1, and up to 2x faster GPU performance. M1 Pro also delivers up to 200GB/s of memory bandwidth — nearly 3x the bandwidth of M1 — and supports up to 32GB of fast unified memory. Designed to dramatically speed up pro video workflows, M1 Pro adds a ProRes accelerator in the media engine, delivering unbelievably fast and power-efficient video processing.

Those who need the very best can also opt for the M1 Max, building on M1 Pro to offer up to 32 GPU cores.

M1 Max — the world’s most powerful chip for a pro notebook — builds on M1 Pro, taking its amazing capabilities even further. M1 Max features the same powerful 10-core CPU as M1 Pro, and doubles the GPU with up to a massive 32 cores for up to 4x faster GPU performance than M1. It also has up to 400GB/s of memory bandwidth — 2x that of M1 Pro and nearly 6x that of M1 — and up to 64GB of fast unified memory.

Apple says that the new machines are its most powerful Mac notebooks ever and that’s something that’s easy to believe. But it’s the return of MagSafe, an HDMI port, and an SDXC slot that will make some professionals happiest.

All of the new MacBook Pro models are available for pre-order from today, with machines starting at $1,999 for the 14-inch model, and $2,499 for the 16-inch one. The notebooks go on sale next week, October 26.
