Ikea And Sonos Launch New AirPlay 2-Compatible Symfonisk Smart Speaker And Lamp

Ikea and Sonos have announced the latest product in their growing line of smart devices, this time in the form of a second generation Symfonisk smart lamp and speaker combination that supports Apple’s AirPlay 2 for improved audio capabilities.

The smart speaker comes with a lamp attached to it and can “decrease clutter, and create atmosphere with both light and sound,” according to a press release.

The new SYMFONISK table lamp speaker allows greater personalization as the product is now divided into the SYMFONISK speaker lamp base and the SYMFONISK speaker lamp shade, which are being sold separately. Customers can choose between a black or white version of the lamp base, as well as two lamp shades in different styles and colors: a textile or glass lampshade, in either black or white. The new lamp also supports a broader range of light bulbs thanks to the added E26/E27 socket.

One notable feature is the use of a new “custom waveguide” that will apparently make the new speaker sound great no matter where it is placed and at which angle someone is listening from. That sounds similar to what Apple does with the HomePod and HomePod mini, but we’ll have to wait to hear what it sounds like to be sure.

The new SYMFONISK table lamp speaker features a completely new acoustic architecture that uses a custom waveguide, creating a great sound experience, from any angle. The lamp speaker connects over WiFi and can be used as the only sound source in a room, or it can be connected with other Sonos products, including those from the SYMFONISK range. As all SYMFONISK products, this speaker is also part of the Sonos system, easily connecting listeners to more than 100 streaming services.

The new speaker and lamp combo will go on sale in Europe and the United States on October 12 with pricing in the US set at $140.

Additional shades will be available at $29 for a textile finish and $39 for glass.
