With the iOS 27 software update for the iPhone, Apple has included a number of new features for users.
Here are the most notable.

Clean Up
Apple has improved the Clean Up feature of Apple Intelligence, making for an improved experience and final result. Now, users can choose between Fast, High Quality, and Auto when making a change. The final result will be better or worse depending on the selection.
Extend
Extend will use generative AI to try and fill in the areas outside of the photo’s frame, allowing for the image to be expanded beyond its original borders. Apple also uses this feature when creating Lock Screens from images that aren’t large enough.
Reframe
Again, using generative AI, Reframe allows users to change the way an image was framed after it was taken. Spatial data is used to help the Photos app adjust the image, with generative AI filling in the gaps.

Metadata Improvements
The Photos app now lets users add keywords and star ratings to photos and videos from within the Photos app on iPhone.
Album Changes
Apple has changed the way albums are organized within iOS 27, with MacRumors noting the following tweaks:
- Shared Albums can be filtered by photos or videos.
- It’s easier to save images from Shared Albums.
- You can set Shared Albums to expire after 30 days, which is useful for sharing photos without having a permanent album.
- It’s easier to invite people to Shared Albums with a dedicated “Create Shared Album” option in any album menu.
- You can create a link for people to upload images to a Shared Album, and there are new permissions so you can require explicit access to be granted.
- Shared Albums have a recent activity log.
- You can react to images in Shared Albums with any emoji.
Slideshow Creation
iPhone owners will be able to create a slideshow from any collection of images from within the Phots app. Currently, slideshows can only be created from Memories.
New Photos Utilities
Captured by Me has been added to the utilities section and only shows photos that have been taken by the current user, even on an older iPhone. Identity Documents brings photos of driver’s licenses, passports, and other ID documents under one hearing.
New iCloud Syncing
With iOS 27, users will be able to choose “Sync Immediately” from within the Photos section of the Settings app, forcing iCloud to sync photos and videos.
