Apple Announces iPad Mini With A20 Pro, Bigger OLED Display, More

Apple today announced the all-new iPad mini, adding a larger display and bringing the A20 Pro chip from the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo to the tablet lineup for the first time.

The new model is thinner than the previous iteration, measuring just 5.4mm thick when compared to the previous generation’s 6.3mm.

It also weighs less, just 255 grams compared to the 297 grams of the outgoing model. Despite that, it’s IP68 water- and dust-resistant and features a new 8.5-inch OLED display. That’s larger than the 8.3-inch LCD model before it, featuring thinner bezels and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits.

However, despite being an OLED panel, the new iPad mini does not support ProMotion, so there’s no 120Hz variable refresh rate here.

Another interesting aspect of the new display is the way it works in tandem with the iPad mini’s speakers. Apple calls it an Acoustic Display.

The new iPad mini features an innovative Acoustic Display for an even better audio experience when gaming, watching videos, or editing content. Specially designed woofers are paired through the display to produce punchier bass and more volume. In addition, custom tweeters are now hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure for clearer highs. The Acoustic Display also features a sealed enclosure that helps iPad mini achieve its IP67 rating.

Other improvements include Apple’s N1 and C2 wireless connectivity chips, bringing Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, plus Thread support. It also supports both the USB-C Apple Pencil and the Apple Pencil Pro.

Unfortunately, the new iPad mini costs more than its predecessor, starting at $699 for the 128GB version. 256GB and 512GB models are also available, as is a nano-texture option. Only two colors are offered, so you get to choose between midnight and starlight when placing your preorder on October 28. The new iPad mini goes on sale on November 6.
