Nintendo Won’t Be Announcing A New Switch Console In 2020

Bad news for Nintendo fans and gamers everywhere after Nintendo confirmed that there will be no new Nintendo Switch in 2020. There had been hopes that we would see a refresh of either the Switch or Switch Lite after their huge success. But that’s not going to happen.

The confirmation came after Shuntaro Furukawa, CEO and President of Nintendo, told investors that his company has “no plans” to launch a new console this year.

Regarding Nintendo Switch, we believe that it is important to continue to communicate the appeal of both Nintendo Switch systems and expand the installed base. Please note that we have no plans to launch a new Nintendo Switch model during 2020.

Nintendo has reportedly sold more than 53 million Nintendo Switch consoles since the model went on sale back in 2017, so it’s clear that the company has gotten something right following the flop that was the Wii U. Now Nintendo apparently wants to focus on making sure as many customers as possible pick up new Switches this year, whether that’s the standard model of the newer Switch Lite. Nintendo also plans to make sure it does a better job of communicating “the special features and appeal of Nintendo Switch Lite”.

We feel that we have not yet fully communicated the special features and appeal of Nintendo Switch Lite, so we will continue to address this going forward.

That now means that we’re likely to see a new Switch in 2021, four years after the first version came to market. By that time, it should have new consoles from both Microsoft and Sony to compete with.
