The original iPad mini, first made publicly available back in October 2012, has seemingly come to the end of its shelf life. The internal hierarchy within Apple has given the order to silently remove the first-generation iPad mini from sale, which appears to apply to Apple Store retail outlets as well as the company’s Web store. The device may have been removed from sale through official Apple retail channels but the effect that it made on the future of the product genre is still apparent in the company’s portfolio.

Apple tends to be pretty good at tweaking its products year-on-year in order to maintain consumer interest, but it certainly bucked the trend with the iPad mini 3. One of the biggest disappointments on record from the Cupertino company, it added Touch ID, a gold color option and not a lot else, yet Apple still felt that it warranted a major price bump. It has been rumored that the Mac maker is hastily preparing an upgrade, which may also include some design alterations, and a new leak of the purported rear shell sheds some light on this.

That doesn’t stop analyst upon analyst trying to guess and double-guess what the folks in Cupertino have up their collective sleeves, and it doesn’t stop us from listening to them either. Which is fine, so long as their claims come with a healthy dose of salt.

The iPad mini, which was recently given a Retina display and improved processor by Apple, is one of the most sought-after tablets on the market right now. As is the case with most new Apple products, the knock-off makers have been hot on its trail to deliver something similar for a lower price, and although the Chuwi V88’s 1024 x 768 display puts it on par with the old iPad mini, the $177 price tag – coupled with the fact that it boasts some fairly useful specs – means it might be worth checking out for those seeking something like the iPad mini without the iPad mini price.

Consumers living in all initial release countries have been frantically descending on Apple Retail Stores to get their hands on the iPad mini 2 with Retina display. The smaller form-factor tablet has proven to be extremely popular in the time that has followed its first-generation launch with the recent introduction of the Retina display and A7 processor only extending that popularity. The limited inventory in online and physical retail outlets show just how popular the new iPad mini has become, but those owners who also have the larger iPad Air may just find themselves comparing color output on the Retina display and finding themselves a little confused.

It seems that we can’t have any big Apple product release these days without it being laden with some sort of baggage. The infamous ‘antennagate’ debacle of the iPhone 4 was perhaps the biggest blow up that we’ve seen lately, but that doesn’t mean that other products haven’t had their fair share of issues. It seems that the very recent release of the iPad mini 2 with Retina display may be the latest Apple hardware to suffer from an issue that could very well be blown out of all proportion.
