Twitter Is Finally Working On An Edit Button

Twitter has confirmed that it is indeed working on a new edit button, although details are still sketchy. The announcement comes after an April Fools tweet that said as much, something that many ignored.

Now, the social network has confirmed that it wasn’t a joke at all — an edit button is actively being worked on already.

In fact, Twitter says it’s been working on it since last year.

That’s notable because many had assumed that the announcement was related to a poll run by new Twitter shareholder Elon Musk recently. That poll asked whether Twitter should add an edit button, with more than 73% saying that it should. Some had pondered whether the new announcement was related to that, or Musk’s appearance on Twitter’s board. The company says not.

As for timescales, Twitter says that it’s kicking testing off with Twitter Blue users in the coming months to “learn what works, what doesn’t, and what’s possible.”

It isn’t clear whether the feature will remain a Twitter Blue offering once the testing is done, but it does seem likely that anyone wanting to edit tweets is going to need to cough up the $4.99 per month subscription fee to do it.

Adding an edit button to Twitter does have its problems, though. Websites embed tweets into articles all the time — how will Twitter deal with those tweets potentially being edited later? Only time will tell.
