It emerged earlier on today that the launch of the iPad mini 2 with Retina display had begun, shortly after news began to spread, it became apparent that the device was, at least in the United States, only available for Personal Pickup. Now, a press release from the Cupertino company has confirmed this to be the case, and with such short supply of the second-gen iPad mini, it’s likely to be a while before this begins to change.

The Retina iPad mini 2 was announced alongside the iPad Air at Apple’s special media event in October. But at that time, Apple vaguely announced that the device will be available ‘later in November’, and no proper calendar date was given. And today, out of nowhere, the device has made its way to Apple’s Online Store.

Today is Halloween, and to most Americans, that means parties, costumes, pumpkins – the works. But for many of us geeks, it’s the eve of the release of the iPad Air, and with the larger of the two new Apple tablets now ready for release, Apple fans far and wide are preparing themselves to queue overnight once again. But the iPad mini with Retina display, which Apple also announced at a special event last week, remains pretty elusive as far as a release date goes, and with yield issues apparent for some time now, it’s unknown when the smaller slate will actually make its debut. Some doubted whether Apple would indeed come through with the iPad mini 2 this year, but thanks to today’s official announcement at the special press event, we now know this to be true. As well as packing a wonderfully-crisp Retina panel, the smaller of the two Apple slates also includes quite a few features we’re more than familiar with, including the A7 processor of the iPhone 5s!

The iPhone launch is, for the most part, now over, and attentions have naturally turned to Apple’s secondary product releases of the calendar year. The Mac Pro, which has already been officially announced, could be just a month away from release according to a report over at French Apple blog MacGeneration, which also states that both the Intel Haswell-packing MacBook Pro and new iPads will make their way to the market by the end of October.
