Mophie Has Plans For A Wireless Charging Pad Like Apple’s Failed AirPower

The farce that was Apple’s canceled AirPower product is still something that beggars belief, but with the company having given up on the project, it appears Mophie has picked up the baton with a new AirPower-like charging mat in the works.

Just like AirPower, Mophie’s solution will allow users to place up to three devices anywhere on the charger and have them start sucking up power. However, we don’t yet know whether one of those will be an Apple Watch.

While there are already devices that can wirelessly charge multiple phones and accessories, they all require them to be placed on specific areas of the charging mat.

With AirPower that wasn’t going to be the case, although making that a reality was something Apple struggled with. The number of charging coils required to make such a thing possible reportedly created too much heat. And that was a problem for obvious reasons.

Apple announced its AirPower solution in 2017, but missed a 2018 launch date, and then canceled another rollout in early 2019 citing quality issues. The product faced problems with overheating, Bloomberg News reported.

Now Mophie, and parent company Zagg, appears to be working on the problem. Although it isn’t yet clear exactly what the product will be capable of if and when it comes to market.
