Google Maps Now Supports iOS Home Screen Widgets On iPhone And iPad

Google has today updated its Google Maps app for the iPhone and iPad, adding support for a feature that people have been looking forward to since iOS 14 shipped late last year.

Once users install today’s new update, they can take advantage of the new iOS Home screen widgets.

At launch, Google Maps has two different widgets for users to choose from. One will give them information like weather and traffic information for a specific location, while the other is more of a shortcuts widget. That widget gives people a way to see local gas stations, restaurants, and more.

Thanks for using Google Maps! In this release, we’re launching our first set of Home Screen Widgets to help you plan and navigate to your destination.

Those who already have the Google Maps app installed can download the update now, while everyone else can grab it afresh direct from the App Store right now. It’s a free download and despite the improvements, Apple Maps has seen in recent years, Google’s offering is still the best option for most people.

Why it’s taken Google so long to get widgets into the Google Maps app isn’t clear. The feature has been available since iOS 14 shipped late last year. Still, better late than never, right?
