Blackb0x Is a New Jailbreak Tool For Those With Older Apple TVs

Older Apple TVs don’t support tvOS, but that isn’t going to stop them from being jailbroken. Apple no longer supports those devices, but the people behind the new jailbreak tool known as Blackb0x certainly do and it’s been released into the wild this week.

The tool currently works with the third and fourth-generation Apple TV and it allows those boxes to be jailbroken at will. The process itself is surprisingly simple and all you need is a Mac to run the tool on.

We wouldn’t rush out to buy one of these boxes just to jailbreak it though — these particular Apple TVs now longer support YouTube for example, and there are some other streaming apps that are a no-go as well.

As the folks at iDownloadBlog point out, some of the specific versions of the Apple TV require a tethered jailbreak while others don’t. Check the list below to see which category your particular devices falls into:

  • Apple TV 3,2 (A1469) (tvOS 8.4.x untethered, tvOS 7.x tethered)
  • Apple TV 3,1 (A1427) (tvOS 8.4.x untethered, tvOS 7.x tethered)
  • Apple TV 2,1 (A1378) (tvOS 7.1.2 tethered, tvOS 6.1.4 untethered)

To get started, head over to the project’s Github page here.

Just remember though — any Apple TV that needs a tethered jailbreak will need to be re-jailbroken every time it restarts. Just something else to keep in mind before you get started!
