Tesla Wants People To Be Able To Play Steam Games In Their Cars

Tesla is already letting people play some video games in the cars and now the company’s CEO and founder has confirmed that it wants people to be able to play Steam games there, too.

The move, which will presumably dovetail with Tesla Arcade, would theoretically allow people to play full PC games in their car although it’s possible that only a subset of the full Stream catalog would work depending on system requirements, etc.

While Musk hasn’t given any specific timescales for when any of this will happen, he has said that the Steam catalog is something the company is aiming to open up to Tesla owners in the “long term.”

We’re working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla vs specific titles. Former is obviously where we should be long-term.

Tesla’s most recent Model S and Model X cars both feature upgraded computers that should be capable of playing a decent chunk of Steam’s library. In fact, Tesla previously compared its own hardware with the “newest consoles” available today — Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

Up to 10 teraflops of processing power enables in-car gaming on-par with today’s newest consoles via Tesla Arcade. Wireless controller compatibility allows gaming from any seat.

Whether or not you’d like to play a game in your car is up to you, but there’s no denying that such a feature would further differentiate Tesla in a world where more traditional car companies are catching, and in some cases exceeding, in pure electric driving capabilities.
