Kuo: A New, Cheaper Apple TV Will Launch Later This Year

Apple is set to announce a new, cheaper Apple TV device before the end of 2022 according to a new report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Sharing the information via Twitter, Kuo said that Apple will have the new device ready to ship in the second half of 2022, suggesting it will arrive within the next six months.

The new device will be cheaper to help make it easier for people to buy an Apple TV device — the current HD model sells for $149 while a 4K offering will set buyers back at least $179.

Apple will launch a new version of Apple TV that improves cost structure in 2H22. I think that Apple’s aggressive strategy of integrating hardware, content, and service amid the recession will help close the gap with its competitors.

It isn’t clear whether this will be a device that’s similar to the existing Apple TV but cheaper, or if it will be more akin to the traditional streaming sticks we’ve come to expect from Amazon and Google, among others. We can expect Apple to reduce the amount of storage available in order to save money — the cheapest Apple TV currently ships with 32GB.

While storage isn’t needed for most streaming devices, Apple’s Apple Arcade and App Store require space for apps and games — something that could be removed in order to reduce the asking price.
