Apple Releases New Firmware Update For AirPods, AirPods Pro, And AirPods Max

Apple has released new firmware versions for its AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max earbuds and headphones. Firmware version 4E71 is now available for download marking the first update since 4C165 was released in December.

MacRumors reported the new firmware release, noting that there is no manual way to force AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max to update.

However, all AirPods tend to automatically update their respective firmware when connected to an iOS device. Charging them can also sometimes initiate a software update, although no indication of the update being installed can be seen.

Those looking to check which version of the firmware they have installed can follow these steps using an iPhone or iPad:

Step 1: Connect your AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max to an iPhone or iPad.

Step 2: Open the Settings app and tap General.

Step 3: Tap About.

Step 4: Tap AirPods.

Step 5: Check the number beside the ‘Firmware Version’ text.

It isn’t known what this new firmware offers, but it’s likely to improve battery life and connectivity rather than add any new features. If your AirPods haven’t yet been updated to the new firmware you can trust that they will update themselves at some point, likely over the coming days.
