tvOS 12 Makes Apple TV The Only Set-Top Box In The World With Both Dolby Vision And Dolby Atmos Support

Apple’s WWDC 2018 opening keynote may have ended over two days ago at this point but there is still plenty to learn about what was announced on-stage.

With iOS, macOS and watchOS all getting so much attention it is often easy to forget that tvOS was also confirmed as receiving an update and with tvOS 12, Apple is giving the Apple TV something that no other set-top box can boast.

While the news that Apple TV will be the first set top box to offer both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos at the same time was confirmed during the keynote, it was understandably overlooked by many given the sheer weight of updates that the more popular, arguably more important software releases were given.

That doesn’t meant that this is something that should not be noted though, because being the first, and currently the only, streaming device to to offer the best sound and best image available with Dolby’s moniker on it is no mean feat and one Apple should be commended for.

Combine Apple TV 4K with a Dolby Atmos–compatible sound system and you’re fully immersed in three-dimensional audio that sends sound around and above you with pinpoint precision. Whether a jet zooms overhead or a torrential downpour erupts, the true-to-life sound puts you inside the action. And as the first streaming player to be both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified, Apple TV 4K brings home the complete cinematic experience.

Apple’s tvOS 12 update is in the hands of developers right now and while there was little else of note beyond new screensavers and some minor features here and there, the update will still be one worth looking out for when it arrives on an Apple TV near you later this year.
