We love the iPad Smart Cover and we know you folks do, too. So when we got wind of the fact that the Smart Cover for the 9.7-inch iPad was available at a huge 50% discount, we wanted to make sure everyone was able to take advantage of it.

Apple has today been granted a new patent for an Apple Smart Cover, and although such a thing does already exist, this one certainly features one or two things that you won’t find in any current product. The patent, which we covered back in 2012 when Apple originally filed for it, goes on to explain that the Smart Cover in question would feature not just an additional touchscreen, but also WACOM-like stylus-drawing capabilities, among other things.

The past week has been relatively busy for Microsoft, with the grand unveiling of the all-new Windows 10 operating system, but while the upcoming OS will no doubt consume much of the company’s time and resources over the next six or so months, it’s not the only exciting product currently in the works from the software maker. In fact, Microsoft Research has been developing a much more compelling and innovative creation, which takes Smart Cover technology to a whole new dimension in terms of capabilities, and although the tablet industry is considerably fast-moving one as is, we’re still particularly enthused about where this effort may eventually lead.

Apple’s iPhone may have dominated the headlines over the past couple of weeks, but we’re still expecting one or two more big announcements from Tim Cook’s men. The iPad 5 has been a constant topic of conversation ever since, well.. the iPad 4’s arrival toward the tail-end of last year, and with the iPad mini providing a stellar example of design and build quality, it is widely suspected that the fifth edition of the full-size model will borrow much of its aesthetic qualities from its compact cousin. New smart covers leaked to various channels seem to further corroborate this notion, and with any luck, an iPad mini-fied iPad 5 will be upon us at some point next month.

The Apple iPad is the most popular tablet in the mobile industry, and has been since its inception, but while the Cupertino slate can do no wrong when it comes to helping consumers part with their money, a study by a 14-year-old Californian student has revealed that the device can potentially interfere with implanted defibrillators.

Apple is a company which rarely takes the easy route and conforms to trends in the market just for the sake of keeping up an appearance. This individual approach to the design and development of new products and services has served them well in the past, but has also meant they have come under fire from investors and analysts who believe they may get left behind as they look for the next big innovation. One of the latest key features that is set to be introduced in the next wave of smartphones and tablets is wireless charging, and although Apple have spoken out about this in the past, it looks like they could be in the process of coming up with a solution of their own for future iPad tablets.

Whenever Apple take to the stage to hold an official media event we can always be sure that it will contain a number of purposely made videos that are either overviews of the products on show or ad campaigns that will ultimately end up on the television. Yesterday’s event at the California Theatre was no different with Tim Cook and Phil Schiller proudly showing off a number of videos showing off the range of new products that were announced during the keynote speech, two of which have been uploaded to Apple’s official YouTube channel.

As part of their ongoing desire to produce innovative and truly remarkable products which push the boundaries of an already progressing industry, Apple has filed a patent application for a cover attachment that comes with an embedded flexible display. The application has been brought to public attention by the United States Patent Application Office that published it on their website this morning, but the interesting thing about this application is that it was filed originally in August of last year, only five months after the release of the initial Smart Cover with the second-generation iPad.

As avid followers of the mobile industry here at Redmond Pie, we’ve grown used to seeing how casually Apple dishes out lawsuits to competitors, berating patent infringement here and there, and our favorite: blatant plagiarism. Of course, it’s not all one way traffic, and the likes of Samsung and HTC have dealt with their fair share of suits from Cupertino, California; but these seem more in retaliation than anything, and it does appear Apple’s rivals will do anything to avoid the fruit company’s wrath.
