One of the angles of iOS 7 that seems to be forgotten amongst all the noise about icons and translucency is the renewed focus on Game Center and official support for third party game controller under ‘Made for iPhone’ branding. After what felt like a half-hearted attempt in the recent past, Apple now appears to be on the verge of embracing the huge number of games in the App Store.
After numerous rumors and intense speculation, Microsoft's fantastic and extremely popular Office package has managed to find its way onto the iPhone. The package, which landed on Apple's App Store today, is a mobile optimized companion app that has been built from the ground up to provide access to the loved Office suite of applications directly from an iPhone. This is a fairly notable release by the Redmond company and has been expected for some time, but for some reason has managed to come with minimal fuss and a distinct lack of celebration.
Well, I had to do it. Just days after writing on this very site that I wouldn't dump my iPhone 5 jailbreak On 6.1.2 for a shiny new version of iOS, I'm sat here looking at iOS 7 on the very same iPhone 5.
Over the last few years, we've had to come to get our heads around the fact that we live in a world that is pretty much permanently connected by technology. We can pick up our iPhone and make a FaceTime call to a loved one on the other side of the world. We can launch the App Store and download a spirit level or tax calculator app that can get us out of a tight spot immediately. We can even unlock our front doors thanks to connectivity between Bluetooth low energy devices. If that wasn't enough for you, then it seems that we can now also order convenience food to be delivered directly to us on top of an iPad powered quadrocopter.
The notion of Apple bringing out a low-cost iPhone has always been suggested. With such a popular brand at a sky-high price, perhaps it was always going to be an idea teased by the masses. But this year, there's a really strong consensus that there will indeed be a cheaper model to help corner markets like India and China, as well as allowing those with less disposable cash to still rock an iPhone. Today, images purporting to depict the device have been discovered on Weibo, the 'Chinese Twitter,' and although the bumper case, lack of a snap of the front of the device and a lot of blurriness make for a rather suspect leak, we have to check out all possible avenues in our quest to discover this elusive budget iPhone.
The next-gen iPhone has been a hot topic ever since the release of the iPhone 5, and although Apple is famously good at keeping things under wraps until the 11th hour, many have suggested the next-gen device will come with a fingerprint sensor. Today, designer Frederico Ciccarese shows how this implementation could manifest itself on the next-gen device with a concept which also includes a curved display.
‘Platinum’ for iPhone allows you to place predicted search queries into the search bar of Mobile Safari without actually going ahead and processing them. It's a feature borrowed from Google's Chrome browser, and means that you can skip unnecessary typing while also only pushing the search through once you've fully entered your subject into the field.
Ever imagined what would be the result of combining every display from every iPhone ever sold? Not exactly the latest scoop on the next hardware release to come out of Cupertino, but it's still pretty interesting to know that one single combined iPhone made out of the displays of every iPhone ever sold since the original launch in 2007 would stand over 5,000 feet tall. Sounds epic doesn't it? Read for more!
Keeping our smartphones charged up for when we need them most is something we're always considering, subconsciously or otherwise. As such, the third-party accessory market makes an absolute killing in flogging docks, retractable cables, charging mats, juice packs, and other such products. Considering there are so many different types of charging accessories available, you might have thought the scope for innovation in this field was somewhat limited, but iLoveHandles' "Trunk" Lightning cable for the iPhone 5 proves this not to be the case.
Google Glass is not expected to make consumer release until early on next year, but in the meantime, we've a rather tantalizing situation whereby developers and creative individuals granted early access are talking, tweeting, and sharing images detailing just how cool and exciting this technology really is. Still, while it may be a little much for the general geek to bear, at least the devs are making the most of their privileged early access, and perhaps none more so than prolific developer Adam Bell, who has just figured out a way to route iOS notifications through Glass.
