Sony’s ‘Back Button Attachment’ Adds Customizable Paddle Buttons To PS4 DualShock 4 Controllers

Sony has announced an accessory that adds a couple of customizable paddles to the back of any DualShock 4 controller. It’s called the Back Button Attachment and it fixes to the bottom of the controller.

There’s even a 3.5mm passthrough so you can still plug headphones into it, too.

The accessory not only has a pair of paddles but also has a little OLED screen and button to make it easier to quickly remap what the controls do without having to head into any menu systems.

Interestingly, Sony says that the new Back Button Attachment will work with existing games and will even play nicely with the PlayStation VR headset, too.

The accessory itself goes on sale in the United States on January 23rd and will cost $30. That’s a lot less than the Microsoft Xbox one Elite Series 2 Controller that sells for $180, even when you factor in the cost of a standard DualShock 4, too. But sure, the two aren’t really comparable beyond the fact that they both have paddles.

The timing of this release is particularly odd given the fact that Sony’s PS5 is expected to arrive in less than a year’s time. The Back Button Attachment’s introduction this late into the PS4 game might suggest PS5 compatibility, too. Or it might just mean that Sony wants to take every last cent out of PS4 gamers while it still can.
