Rumor: Apple’s 2022 iPhones And Macs Could Use 3nm Chips

Apple’s 2022 iPhones and Macs could feature new Apple-designed chips based on a 3nm manufacturing process, according to a new report.

According to industry outlet DigiTimes (via MacRumors), Apple chip supplier TSMC is already planning mass production of the chips for the second half of next year.

Apple’s M and A-series chips are already built by TSMC and it’s an arrangement that isn’t expected to change any time soon. According to the report, Apple is the likely destination for TSMC’s new 3nm chips.

TSMC is on track to move its 3nm process technology to volume production in the second half of 2022 for Apple’s devices, either iPhones or Mac computers, according to industry sources.

We heard last month that TSMC was getting ready to bring 3nm chips to market, with many assuming Apple would be the customer likely to benefit. Now DigiTimes is jumping on that bandwagon, suggesting both iPhones and Macs will be the devices making use of 3nm chips next year. We’d also expect iPad Pro devices to be in the mix, too.

Moving to a smaller manufacturing process generally means less power is required while heat reductions are also commonplace. This tends to also mean chips can run more quickly, too.
