Elon Musk Announces ‘Tesla AI Day’ For August 19

Tesla CEO and Founder Elon Musk has announced that August 19 will be Tesla AI day. The day will see the company discuss progress it’s made on artificial intelligence across both software and hardware.

According to a quote from Musk last month, the idea behind the event is to try and recruit people for Tesla’s AI team, although it isn’t yet clear what the format will be or how Tesla will go about that recruitment.

“Looking at holding Tesla AI Day in about a month or so. Will go over progress with Tesla AI software & hardware, both training & inference. Purpose is recruiting.”

As Electrek points out, the focus on recruitment likely means that we shouldn’t expect to see too much about the day from the outside, with Tesla’s AI team set to run the rule over people while trying to attract the best and the brightest of the AI world.

Tesla hopes to differentiate itself by showing talents that their contributions can quickly lead to real-world applications of AI in Tesla products.

On the software front, Tesla is expected to release updates on its effort to develop neural nets to power its computer vision system.

On the hardware front, Tesla is expected to give an update on its supercomputer program, which is going to lead to Tesla Dojo, an upcoming supercomputer optimized for neural net training.

Musk characteristically made the August 19 announcement via Twitter, simply saying “Tesla AI Day August 19th.”

Tesla, Apple, Google, and other companies are vying to try and recruit people that will give them an edge in the world of artificial intelligence, whether it’s related to hardware, software, or services.
