Apple Expects 100 Million iPhone 12 Sales In 2020 As 5G Demand Surges

Apple expects to be able to sell more than 100 million iPhone 12 units in 2020, according to a new report.

Citing Apple’s supply chain partners, Digitimes says that Apple has told them that it will need more than 100 million iPhone 12 handsets for 2020, up from the 80 million iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models that were required previously.

That increase from 80 million to 100 million sounds excessive, but the report claims that Apple is confident that sales will be bolstered by the inclusion of 5G connectivity for the first time. Apple is yet to join the 5G market and it’s thought that by including the feature in next year’s iPhone 12 the company will tap into pent-up demand.

Alongside the inclusion of new 5G support, Apple is also expected to redesign the iPhone 12 for the first time in a few years. Recent iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone 11 designs have all followed a very similar theme but iPhone 12 is thought to have a new, iPhone 4-like design in the works. Slab sides will look similar to the current iPad Pro, hopefully making the phone less prone to being dropped.

We don’t expect Apple to announce anything about iPhone 12 for almost a year, but as always we’d expect some more concrete information about the phone to leak ahead of time. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for just that.

If previous releases are any indication we can expect Apple to announce the iPhone 12 in September 2020, with a release taking place the same month.
