Although the Apple TV is still officially classed as hobby project for Apple that takes its place behind the likes of the iPhone and iPad, it is a piece of kit that is growing in popularity and prominence with more units shipping each quarter. FireCore, the guys behind the Seas0nPass jailbreak tool have pushed out an update that provides a tethered jailbreak on the latest iOS 5.0 (iOS 5.1 – 9B179b) firmware. The update to the popular jailbreak tool currently only supports the second-generation Apple TV unit and therefore will not provide any jailbreak on the 1080p capable third-gen Apple TV. The tethered nature of this jailbreak obviously means that every time the unit needs to be rebooted, it will have to be connected to your PC or Mac to be put into a jailbroken state.

Apple rolled out yet another update to the Apple TV firmware. Many have asked if you could jailbreak the Apple device with the new 4.4.3 update. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that while you can jailbreak it, some of the optional apps used with a jailbroken Apple TV won’t work. The movie server, Plex, as well as Rowmote are not supported yet.
