If a new smartphone has been on your immediate wish list, but you really aren’t a heavy enough user to warrant parting with upwards of $800 for a top-of-the-range modern option, then the time has potentially arrived to reach in and grab that credit card out. Samsung’s Galaxy S range of Android-powered smartphones really don’t need any introduction, and even though we’re talking about the S5 version of the series rather than the latest S7, it’s still worth $159.99 of anyone’s money, if not as a primary phone, then certainly as a secondary phone.

The decision to integrate biometric detection into consumer electronics may be popular with users and shows the willingness of companies to embrace emerging technologies, but the fundamental reason for such integration boils down to one thing: an attempt to improve security. It actually forms part of who that person is as an individual and is quite possibly as personal as it can get, so when things go wrong, as one research company will point out at this week’s RSA, it raises a lot more eyebrows than a simple password breach. According to a new report, a number of Android devices are failing to protect the data of users that is captured through integrated biometric sensors.

When you’re one of the largest smartphone makers in the world, not to mention a major manufacturer in several other household electronics as well, having massive marketing budgets is neither major nor surprising. Flagship mobile products tend to outsell those preceding year-on-year, but in the case of Samsung’s Galaxy S5, it’s struggling to eclipse the achievements of the Galaxy S4. Having been launched at the Mobile World Congress back in February to a mixed reception, it enjoyed solid early sales numbers, but with Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus having proved a thorn in the side of the Galaxy Note 4, it appears that even the S5 has not managed to hit the heights.

The annual Pwn2Own competition, held at the PacSec conference in Tokyo, is now under way. The challenge, for those willing to undertake it, is to bypass security measures and exploit a device’s sandbox, with significant monetary gains to be made for the most complex, highly-rated hacks. We may only be at day one, but thus far, Pwn2Own has been an unqualified success for our hackers, with some of the most popular devices in the mobile industry having already been pwned.

There will always be people wanting to argue over which device is best. Is it the latest and greatest phone to come out of Apple’s Cupertino design labs, or Samsung’s newest Android-powered Galaxy S effort? It’s a discussion that has been going on ever since Samsung and Apple squared up to each other at the higher end of the smartphone market, and while there are obviously devices on sale from other hardware makers, it’s the two arch rivals that tend to capture the imaginations, and the wallets, of most customers.
