Studio Display’s Power Cable Can Be Removed, But Only With Apple’s Proprietary Tool

Apple’s new Studio Display is now available to buy and people are discovering that the power cable isn’t as removable as they first hoped.

While you might not need to remove it very often, it’s something that could come in handy — and the special connection doesn’t want to be disconnected. It is possible, however, if you use enough force — something that can be scary when dealing with a new $1,599 monitor.

But Apple has a plan.

While Apple says that the power cable isn’t removable, that appears to really just be the case for users. Apple itself can easily remove the cable by using a special tool that has been shared to Twitter. It appears that the cable is simply wrapped around the tool to add leverage before pulling. It isn’t particularly impressive, but we have to assume that it works.

Quite why Apple chose not to make the power cable easily removed isn’t clear, but there has to be a reason. Thankfully we now know that Apple has the tool required to take the cable off should it need to.

Apple’s Studio Display went on sale last week and starts at $1,599 depending on the stand and finish buyers choose. The 5K, 60Hz display has come in for some criticism for its poor quality webcam, although Apple says that a software update should fix that in the future.
