Some Users Report That Their HomePods Are Failing After Recent Software Updates

A number of users have taken to Reddit to complain that their HomePods have failed after being updated to either version 14.6 or 15 of their software.

While version 15 is a beta release, it isn’t thought to have any bearing on the issue given the fact version 14.6 is also impacted.

According to a new 9to5Mac report, all of the people who have reported issues were using HomePods that were connected to an Apple TV, suggesting that whatever is causing the HomePods to fail may be related to Apple’s set-top box.

It isn’t clear whether that’s actually the case, but one person with 19 HomePods had a handful fail when connected to an Apple TV.

I have a total of 19 HomePods at home. Six of them are on Beta and the others on 14.6. As of today, seven are no longer working. Four on the beta and three on 14.6. I use the HomePods normally and listen to music from time to time but not very loud, on average about 20% volume. All the ones on the beta are connected as default speakers on the Apple TV.

Anyone with a failed HomePod is out of luck to some extent, too. There is no way to restore the software of a HomePod and a device that is outside of Apple Care will likely incur a $280 fee to be replaced. There is also the possibility that Apple simply won’t have a HomePod to hand out after the smart speaker was discontinued earlier this year.
