Report: Future 11-Inch And 12.9-Inch iPad Pro Will Use OLED Screens

Apple’s 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro will both benefit from OLED technology in their screens, at least at some point, according to a new report.

While no hard timescales were given, it’s not expected that OLED is in the future of either iPad Pro model this year.

The new report comes via Display Supply Chain Consultants‘ Ross Young who also cited a report by The Elec that claimed LG is working to bring OLED screens to both the larger and smaller iPad Pro.

“Looking at tablets beyond 2022, we expect to see Apple shake-up this category again by launching OLED iPad Pros,” noted Young. The current 12.9-inch iPad Pro makes use of mini-LED and while the 11-inch version has been left behind in that regard, it isn’t expected to benefit from the same technology this year.

The cited report by The Elec notes that the new OLED panels provided by LG Display will allow for similar ProMotion refresh rates to that of the new iPhone 13 Pro devices. That would mean a range of between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on what’s being displayed on-screen.

Apple’s 11-inch iPad Pro in particular finds itself in an odd space following the refresh of the iPad Air. The new iPad Air comes with an M1 chip inside and continues to erode the gap between the two devices. The move to OLED for both iPad Pro models would surely help in terms of product differentiation in the future.
