Although we don't believe that the current Apple versus Samsung trial is a good thing for the technology world, it certainly does make up for an interesting watch from the outside and allows us to get an insight into the inner workings and design strategies of both companies. Certain statements and depositions from those giving evidence in the case are providing us with what would otherwise be a pretty much impossible look into the early design decisions that centered around the development of the iPhone.

As part of their ongoing desire to produce innovative and truly remarkable products which push the boundaries of an already progressing industry, Apple has filed a patent application for a cover attachment that comes with an embedded flexible display. The application has been brought to public attention by the United States Patent Application Office that published it on their website this morning, but the interesting thing about this application is that it was filed originally in August of last year, only five months after the release of the initial Smart Cover with the second-generation iPad.

We should all know by now that Apple and Samsung are locked in a trial centered around a patent infringement case that has been bubbling away for the better part of the last eighteen months. With various allegations being made from either side, the dispute is primarily focused on the alleged patent and design infringements, with Apple said to be looking for $2 billion in compensation from the Korean electronics giants. As is usually the case with trials that center around this kind of thing, nothing is ever straight forward with Samsung vehemently disputing the claims and making their own accusations aimed at Apple.

If you actually stand back and think about it, some of the most popular apps on an iOS device are centered around text input for storage of information or for use in some kind of communication like an email or text message. Native apps like Messages, Mail and Notes are all heavily based around text input and would just be useless shells without it. Apple obviously offers an on-screen keyboard that is easy to use and intuitive, but just because it is the standard method of text input it doesn't mean it's the best.

It seems like yesterday when the iPhone 4S was launched, and we already find ourselves in the first week of August fighting our way through the daily speculation about when Apple will finally announce and launch their sixth iteration of the insanely popular iPhone. For the better part of this year, it has been widely speculated that the new device will follow last year’s release schedule and make its way into our lives at some point in October, but recent speculation has been intensifying about a possible media event on September 12th which will introduce us to the new iPhone, an iPad Mini and a couple of new iPods.
