Apple today announced its new software updates for this fall, and they all have one thing in common, the new Liquid Glass interface language.
The WWDC 2025 event got off to a quick fire start today with the opening keynote unveiling new software for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro.
Everything except Apple’s spatial computer has a new interface for users to enjoy, and Apple says that its “translucent material reflects and refracts its surroundings, while dynamically transforming to help bring greater focus to content, delivering a new level of vitality across controls, navigation, app icons, widgets, and more.”
Ultimately, the new interface borrows heavily from the Aero interface that debuted with Windows Vista back in 2006, albeit with an Apple bent. The new look will also bring “harmony” to the Apple lineup, the company says, while still maintaining its unique qualities.
“At Apple, we’ve always believed in the deep integration of hardware and software that makes interacting with technology intuitive, beautiful, and delightful,” said Alan Dye, Apple’s vice president of Human Interface Design. “This is our broadest software design update ever. Meticulously crafted by rethinking the fundamental elements that make up our software, the new design features an entirely new material called Liquid Glass. It combines the optical qualities of glass with a fluidity only Apple can achieve, as it transforms depending on your content or context. It lays the foundation for new experiences in the future and, ultimately, it makes even the simplest of interactions more fun and magical.”
The new Liquid Glass look and feel is coming to all of Apple’s apps and will be available for developers to employ later this year. The changes mean that tab bars and sidebars have been redesigned throughout the software.
The new look also extends to the Home Screen and Lock Screen, including glass-like notifications and icons. Owners of iPhones can choose to have all of their apps’ icons appear as if a clear piece of glass, for example.
Apple will today make the first betas of iOS 26 and the rest of its software available to developers. A public beta will arrive next month, while the final releases are expected to arrive this September.
