Elon Musk Says He’s Working On TruthGPT, A ‘truth-seeking’ AI

AI is a big deal right now and you can’t move on the internet without falling over someone telling you how amazing it is. OpenAI’s ChatGPT is the darling of the internet right now, but not so much in Elon Musk’s house.

According to him, we need something new. We need a “maximum truth-seeking AI,” he says.

Musk said that in an interview Fox News’s Tucker Carlson when he said that he believes a new type of AI is needed to avoid humanity’s destruction. Predictably, he believes he’s the man to make it.

The Verge reported on the conversation with Carlson.

“I’m going to start something which I call TruthGPT or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe,” Musk said. “And I think this might be the best path to safety in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe.”

It isn’t obvious yet just how far TruthGPT’s development has gone or even if there has actually been any development at all. It’s possible all of this is just Musk seeking to jump on the AI hype-train after helping found OpenAI years ago.

Musk does have a new AI company called X.AI that he can use for any I work of course, but it remains to be seen how much of Musk’s talk will turn into something actually useful.
