Bloomberg: Apple Has A New HomePod In The Works With A Screen And Cameras

Apple is working on some sort of HomePod range that will include speakers and screens, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

This report comes just days after Apple discontinued the original HomePod, leaving the HomePod mini as the only smart speaker the company currently offers.

The news, which was part of a larger article detailing the HomePod mini’s unannounced “secret sensor” that could report temperature and humidity, is particularly interesting given Apple’s privacy stance.

A smart speaker with cameras is something that the likes of Google and Amazon already offer, but many people have suggested that they are uncomfortable with having them in their homes.

Could Apple change all that?

While Bloomberg does say that HomePods with screens and cameras are being worked on, it does also note that a release isn’t imminent.

Apple continues to chip away at this opportunity through updates to individual devices. Before the discontinuation of the larger HomePod, the company had been working on an updated version for release in 2022. It has also been developing new speakers with screens and cameras, but such a launch isn’t imminent. Apple is also working on an update to the Apple TV set-top box. Until that time comes, Apple will likely try to unlock the most functionality from the HomePod mini.

Apple’s HomePod mini has proven popular since its launch late last year, not least thanks to its relatively affordable $99 price tag.
