Oliver Haslam has written about technology for over a decade. His work has been published in print at Macworld and online pretty much everywhere else. If it plugs in or has a battery, it's fair game.
Arguably a week late due to Apple’s developer portal security breach and then that portal subsequently being offline for far, far too long, iOS 7 beta 4 is now finally in the hands of developers. Three weeks after the third beta was pushed out, this new fourth iteration brings with it the usual raft of interface changes as well as some tweaks under the hood. I've been using it for a good few hours at this point, and following on from my previous posts along the same vein, here's how beta 4 is shaping up in these early hours after I updated my iPhone 5.
When Google announced its new Chromecast streaming dongle, the response amongst the technology world was split into two camps. Some shrugged their shoulders and said that it did nothing that Apple's Apple TV and AirPlay didn't already do. Others lauded the possibilities created by Google's cross-platform approach to something that had previously been an Apple-only affair. We sat somewhere in the middle of those two options, but now we're getting more excited, and with good reason.
We've had more rumors than we care to count of late, all claiming that Apple will release a new, budget oriented iPhone later this year, possibly alongside the more expensive iPhone 5S. At this point it's almost a certainty that Apple will indeed bring two new model iPhones to market around September or October time, but the rumor-mill is still working on working out the details.
A new untethered jailbreak tool, by the name of UnthreadedJB, has just been released which apparently can jailbreak CDMA iPhone 4 running on iOS 5.1.
When Apple announced the original iPhone back in 2007, perhaps the biggest thing that Steve Jobs spoke about at the time was the new way of inputting data onto the device. Before then, smartphones had clunky hardware keyboards and small screens but now, post-iPhone, things were going to change, with large screens and software keyboards becoming the norm.
Apple's Developer Portal has been offline for some time now, and with reports of a claimed security breach by a security researcher still echoing across the internet, the iPhone maker has today updated its users and developers on the situation, whilst also offering more information on how the company intends to restore service to its developer hub. More details regarding the situation can be found right after the jump.
Verizon's Motorola DROID brand is often confused with Google's Android in general, especially amongst 'normal' people who don't live and breathe smartphones like we do. If there was ever proof that wall-to-wall advertising does the job, it's the way many people call any Android device a 'DROID.'
Every once in a while a new app pops up in the App Store that piques our interest, which is no mean feat considering the number of apps we see. The latest app to get our juices flowing is xRec, and at less than two dollars we're going to go ahead and recommend everyone gets it downloaded now - before Apple pulls it.
Apple's often ignored Apple Store app for iOS will get an update this coming Tuesday, with Apple's current push on trying to get people to buy its hardware from its own stores apparently the crux of the update. Links to content on Apple's app and book stores will also be front and center.
