Apple’s M2 Max Chip Benchmarks Just Leaked Online

Apple is expected to announce a new line of MacBook Pros with the M2 Max and M2 Pro chips inside in early 2023. Now, the former appears to have popped up on the website of benchmarking app Geekbench.

The M2 Max is expected to replace the M1 Max that is currently used in the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro as well as the Mac Studio. According to the Geekbench result found online, the new chip has two extra cores for a total of 12.

This configuration also has 96GB of RAM, which is more than the MacBook Pro’s current upper limit of 64GB.

As for the results of the speed tests, things might not be quite as impressive as some had hoped, reports MacRumors.

According to the test, the ‌M2‌ Max chip scored 1,853 in single-core and 13,855 in multi-core. For comparison, the M1 Max chip in the Mac Studio scored 1,755 in single-core and 12,333 in multi-core. If the ‌M2‌ Max chip results are accurate, the performance increase will be relatively minor for the upcoming chip.

The extra multi-core performance comes from those two extra cores, no doubt. But the relatively small speed boost does suggest that those who already have a 2021 MacBook Pro might be better holding on to their machine rather than upgrading.

However, we don’t know what other changes the new machines might have, so we will need to wait for the official unveiling before we can be too sure.
