Apple Watch Gets ECG Support In China, But Only On watchOS 8 Beta 2

The Apple Watch is getting ECG support in China, but right now it only seems to be working for those who are running the watchOS 8 beta 2 update.

We at least know that China’s authorities have given Apple Watch ECG support the green light to be enabled.

The ECG functionality is part of Apple Watch Series 4, Apple Watch Series 5, and Apple Watch Series 6 and has been proven to save lives. It does require local medical approval before it can be made available in specific countries, however. That’s now happened in China, with MacRumors spotting that the feature passed the National Medical Products Administration tests this week.

Spotted by MacRumors, China’s National Medical Products Administration has revealed that Apple Watch ECG has been approved in the country this week. That gives the green light to Apple to launch the feature any time.

The folks at ITHome have since been able to confirm that the feature works if you’re running an Apple Watch with watchOS 8 beta 2 installed. It isn’t yet clear whether that means that the feature will go live this fall when watchOS 8 ships, or if something funky is going on here. We’ll know for sure when something more official is announced at some point in the future.
