Apple AirTag Firmware Update 1.0.291 Released

Apple has released a new version of the firmware that powers its AirTag item trackers, although it isn’t clear what the new software offers.

As reported by 9to5Mac, the new firmware release 1.0.291, carrying build number 1A291a.

“Prior to today, the most recent version of AirTag firmware was version 1.0.276 and build number 1A287b,” the report reads.

There is no way to force AirTag to carry out a firmware update, but it should happen automatically whenever an AriTag is in range of an iPhone that it has been paired with. Users can check which version of the firmware their AirTag is running, however.

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Select the Items tab at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select the AirTag from the list of items on-screen.
  4. Tap the name of the AirTag.

The AirTag’s serial number and current firmware version should be listed.

While we don’t know what this new firmware update brings to the table, it’s likely it is improving existing features and performance rather than adding anything new. Apple is known to be working on an Android app that can be used to detect an AirTag, so it’s possible this update is related to that.
