Fingal is a new jailbreak tweak that aims to bring the world of animated live icons to the iOS Home screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. iOS doesn’t support animated app icons for third-party apps. Apple though does have some stock apps like the Clock one for example which shows real live time right on the app’s icon. Fingal wants to change all that by bringing live animated app icons to just about any app out there.

One of the most popular iOS jailbreak themes on Cydia has to be Ayecon, from Surenix. It’s been around in various guises for some time now, and has been installed on more iPhones, iPads and iPod touches than we care to guess, and we’re sure it’ll be installed on countless more too. In fact, we’re particularly confident about that now that Surenix has announced via a blog post that Ayecon for iOS 7 is almost ready for primetime.

When 0bscure 7 came onto my radar, I immediately gave it the once over due to its simple but very impactive visuals. The entire theme consist of black and white icons, which when paired with the right background, creates a gorgeous look for your iOS device’s home screen.

With the release of iOS 7 soon to be upon us, many of the core reasons to jailbreak your device are now integrated right into iOS itself. Things such as quick toggles, and improved multi-tasking functionality have been seen to by Apple; but it just doesn’t have the same appeal of being able to do it ourselves. Thousands of jailbreak packages are available within the Cydia software distribution service, and they’re certainly not going anywhere.

It has long since been noted that the once clear distinction between OS X, Apple’s desktop OS, and iOS, the company’s mobile firmware, has been blurred over the past couple of years, and Mountain Lion, the current latest official version of OS X, is certainly a testament to that notion with its implementation of features like iMessage and Notification Center. Despite the growing list of similarities between the two, they remain aesthetically like night and day, but if you’re keen to bring that desktop look and feel to your iPhone, a new OS X Mavericks 10.9 theme has you covered.

Elegant and professional looking WinterBoard and DreamBoard themes that dramatically change the look of iOS are hard to find. Much to the detriment of the reputation of the theming community, a lot of theme packages on Cydia look like they have been put together by someone using Microsoft Paint at the most basic level, but thankfully, not everyone has that amateur approach. As Steve Jobs famously once said: “Design is not just what it looks and feels like. Design is how it works” and you definitely get that feeling from the elegance of the just-updated Retina ready MIUI v5.

The iOS keyboard has hardly changed since the earlier days of iPhone OS, and as such, the jailbreak community have consistently looked for ways to freshen things up for those who like to chop and change. Some alternative keyboards are a tad over-the-top, while others are just plain garbage, but when a designer manages to combine subtlety, elegance and minimalism in one fell swoop, we simply have to pay it a little bit of attention.

We could be just a couple of months away from gaining an insight into what Apple plans to do with iOS 7, but as the Cupertino company’s software development team continues to work in collaboration with lead hardware designer Jony Ive to create the next revision, many Apple fans have also been offering their own ideas on what could be done to improve the look of the famed mobile OS. We’ve seen quite a few concept designs hitherto, but a theme we recently discovered over at MacCiti rather delightfully combines elements of the current iOS interface with a tiled, Windows Phone-esque appearance which in turn borrows from the HTC One design. It’s an interesting recipe for sure, but as I suspect you’ll agree after seeing the screenshots below, it’s one that works very well indeed.

We’ve made it our mission to get intricate with most of the powerful and interesting tweaks that land on Cydia. Some of them may not be to our tastes, and some of them may not offer the functionality that we would necessarily make use of, but each user is different and the old saying of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” definitely springs to mind when talking about jailbreak tweaks. We have also made it our mission to stay away from jailbreak orientated themes unless they are truly exceptional and make Apple’s iOS a genuinely more attractive and elegant place to be. I guess that must mean that the Carla theme for jailbroken iOS devices is one of those stand out creations that makes the grade.
