We've had rumors of it for months, if not years at this point but if new reports are to be believed, Apple is set to finally bring an updated version of its Apple TV to market this September.
Apple TV owners can now sit back, relax and enjoy all of the spills and thrills that shows like Ray Donovan, Homeland, and Penny Dreadful offer without having to pay for an expensive monthly cable television service. Previously available as 'Showtime Anytime' on Apple TV for those with a cable TV subscription, CBS has now flipped the switch and brought an all new Showtime app to Cupertino's set-top box, this time allowing users to access the service for a monthly fee with no cable subscription required.
Streaming video is one thing the Apple TV does well, and those who like shows that belong under the Showtime banner will soon be able to watch its shows on iOS and Apple TV without the need for a cable subscription on July 12th.
Apple has today launched a new channel for its Apple TV set-top box, with National Geographic joining the recently released Apple Events channel which will play host to this year's WWDC keynote event.
Apple continues to add more channels to its Apple TV set-top box, and this time it's CBS Sports and USA NOW that have made the cut - along with a bunch of few others, depending on the region you're currently in. If you have a second or third generation Apple TV, the new channels should show up automatically in the next few hours.
According to a new report published by The New York Times, the Apple TV 4 will not only benefit from a hardware upgrade but will also come with a much revamped accompanying remote control. It's been speculated for quite some time that the Cupertino outfit have made the shift internally from classing the Apple TV as a "hobby" project to actually being a viable, self sustaining product that has mass wide appeal with consumers. As part of that internal shift it seems that Apple will overhaul the aesthetics of the remote control in time for the fourth-generation launch.
If you were considering ordering an Apple TV any time soon then it may be wise to hold fire for a little while. With rumors swirling that Apple is finally going to give the little black hockey puck a much needed revision, the Apple TV has just seen its expected shipping time stretch out to 1-2 weeks after previously showing as 'In Stock' in Apple's online store.
Apple TV has continually added content streams and services over the past year or so, as part of the company's concerted effort to boost the profile and general value of its set-top. NBC Sports is the latest addition to the fold, and if you're a big sports fan, you'll be pleased to learn that live streaming of events is also included in the deal. Full details after the jump.
