Apple A12 And A13 Chips Suffer From A New, Unpatchable Exploit

Security researchers at Paradigm Shift have published details of a new BootROM vulnerability that affects the A12 and A13 chips that are used in some older iPhones.

The group is working on a new proof-of-concept exploit under the name “usbliter8.”

What makes these kinds of exploits so notable is the way they affect the BootROM. BootROM, also known as SecureROM, is the software that runs immediately once an iPhone is powered on.

That means that any vulnerability that affects the chips themselves, Apple is unable to fix the issue via a software update. This, in turn, means that all affected devices will remain affected no matter what.

The last time that we saw a BootROM exploit released was “checkm8” from 2019, and it only affected older iPhones from the iPhone 4S through to the iPhone X. With this news, the iPhones that can not be protected by software updates include the iPhone XS through the iPhone 11 series of devices.

The security firm says that it has reported its findings to Apple Product Security and worked with Apple ahead of the exploit’s disclosure. Now, it remains to be seen whether the exploit results in a new jailbreak for devices up to the iPhone 11.
