Spotify Sides With Epic Games In Battle With Apple

The Epic Games and Apple confrontation is one that isn’t going anywhere fast after exploding yesterday, and now Spotify has weighed in on the situation.

Unsurprisingly, it sides with the Fortnite developer.

Spotify has already had its own war of words with Apple and its App Store policy, so when it released a statement to Recode saying it was behind Epic Games, nobody should have been surprised.

We applaud ‌Epic Games‌’ decision to take a stand against Apple and shed further light on Apple’s abuse of its dominant position. Apple’s unfair practices have disadvantaged competitors and deprived consumers for far too long. The stakes for consumers and app developers large and small couldn’t be higher and ensuring that the iOS platform operates competitively and fairly is an urgent task with far-reaching implications.

Epic Games has now issued lawsuits against both Apple and Google over the way their handle their own app stores, saying they are anti-competitive. It might have a point, too, with its Fortnite game removed from both the App Store and Play Store because it implemented a payment system that worked around Apple and Google’s payment systems.

Both Apple and Google have been pushed on their anti-competitive nature in recent weeks and this new spotlight won’t help either in that regard. Which, honestly, is probably why Epic Games did what it did.
