Looks Like IKEA Is Integrating Sonos Speakers Into Its Home Furniture

It’s no secret that Sonos speakers are hugely popular among people who want to have good quality audio piped throughout their homes, and while the speakers themselves are far from ugly, there is always room for improvement.

Is it possible that we could see Sonos functionality build into furniture in the future, removing the need for a visible speaker completely? Depending on how you read IKEA’s tease, that may be exactly what will happen.

IKEA and Sonos is making sound for the home together. Sound is important in the home. Sound creates meaning and experiences, and it can enhance life at home instantly. Now IKEA is taking on sound in the home together with Sonos, and will explore how to make it even easier for people to play any song, anywhere in the home, without interrupting the flow of daily life. Enabling people to create the right atmosphere in their home with great design, music and sound.

That, of course, doesn’t really tell us anything at all. While the idea of IKEA and Sonos working together could have all kinds of meanings, we hope that we will soon be able to walk into a store and check out a sofa with Sonos technology built right in. After all, the furniture company already offers things like tables with built-in Qi wireless charging pads and HomeKit-compatible smart bulbs, so why not?

Sonos is not giving anything away either, simply saying that it is excited to see what can be accomplished via its new work with IKEA. When a furniture maker and a home speaker maker collaborate though, there is surely only one outcome – furniture with speakers build in. And that has the potential to be either amazingly awesome, or, well, not.

We’ll have to wait and see which it turns out being.
