Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  8. I can't run blackrain.exe. I get get dozens of DLL errors. The one I'm stuck on now is “icuin36.dll is not a valid windows image”. I've downloaded the DLL from a number of sources, but they all seem to be the same file size, and produce the same error. I'm using WindowsXP at the moment. Anyone else overcome this? I can try on a vista machine I supposed.

  9. all of the .dll files needed are in the itunes program files, all in the same place.
    copy blackra1n.exe to this directory:
    C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleApple Application Support
    with all the .dll files in the same directory, it'll work.
    that's how i did it, it should work for you.

  11. hi amrit, i've just purchase a 16gb 3gs. i get the vendor to unlock it… think it's jailbreak. but now whenever i off my hp, it shows 'connect to itune'. then i need to run blackra1n on my PC in order to switch “on” my phone. any method to bypass this as if i'm on plane, i need to off the phone and very troublesome for me to look for a computer to run blackra1n 🙁

  12. Help! I have a jailbroken phone. I updated Cydia for the first time then the next thing I know, icon gone. I don't know how to get it back. I tried to use blackra1n to get my Cydia back but itunes is asking me to restore my iphone. i have firmware 3.1.2 now. what do you think would happen if i restore it? do you think i will get my Cydia back?

  13. HELLO I HAVE A 3G ITS CURRENTLY ON 3.1.3 7E18. TRIED USING SNOWBREEZE BUT WHEN RESTORING IT KEEPS STICKING IN ITUNES ON PREPARING IPHONE,AFTERWARDS GET A 1604 ERROR. TRIED SEVERAL OTHER DATA CABLES AND USED 2 OTHER PC'S- SAME PROBLEM. SOME HELP PLEASE

  18. I just Jailbreaked my iPod like a day ago, my iPod touch runs on 3.1.2 firmware(7D11) and i accidently upgraded my iPod to 3.1.3 firmware. I tried to downgrade it, but it says that my iPod isn't eligible to restore. I tried the “shift” button and clicked restore, and nothing. I also tried redsn0w to jailbreak 3.1.3 firmware, but i noticed that its only for the iPod touch 1G and 2G. Did i do something really wrong? and also do you know if “Blackra1n” is going to get to jailbreak the iPod touch 3G 3.1.3 firmware?

    Do you have an MC model or not? if so, are the 4th and 5th digit together lower than 40? (so it should look like xxx40xxblahblah or lower).
    If its an MC model it wont work, yet. Still no fix released for this. Also if those are numbers are higher than 40, it has new bootrom, meaning it wont work either.

    Check your version number in your iPhone (go to Settings->General->Info).
    If it says 3.1.2, download the proper version of blackra1n or redsn0w, look for them in the 3.1.2 JB guides, and try again. If it says differently, check for that version unless its 3.1.3 .

  21. Thanks helper. Unfortunately that still didn’t work.
    I managed to resolve the issue. I had to back up all my iPhone again, re-restore 3.1.2, jailbreak and then unlock the phone, then instead of loading the original restore I had to create a new phone under iTunes and then restore individual backed up items individually.

    The main key was creating a new phone record on iTunes and not using the old one.

  28. Go to C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleApple Application Support (windows xp but also i think it works for other windows os) right click asl.dll and open with choose your blackra1n.exe location.You will be able to use your blackra1n.exe.

  31. just save the blackra1n exe into C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleApple Application Support then just make a shortcut to ur desktop (this is on xp though) hope this helps

  33. i think i tried to 3g to 3.1.2 … what happened was that when i was trying to load some songs into my iphone through itunes it prompted me some sync or restore thing and then it went on and the phone is stuck now .. shows only cd itunes and usb symbol … cant do anything and it says emergency calls only … and prompts my imei and iccid numbers when i touch the “i” key .
    pls somebody let me know … i wasnt aware of it and i thought it was necessary to upgrade as the itunes itself prompted me for it 🙁

  34. I got the answer well im not to sure if this is right or not I'm running Vista 64-bit but this is what I did
    move the exe to one of these folders
    32-bit: C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleApple Application Support
    64-bit: C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAppleApple Application Support
    try both no matter what you have got if they don't work then sorry I have no idea what else to do

  37. this is crappy i did do the new itunes and download blackra1n but after on blackra1n it told me to hold the wake/power buttons together then only wake but when i did that my ipod went black. blackra1n said there was an error with the file then the blackra1n screen went away off the computer screen and the ipod lost connection with itunes and i have 3.1.2 also when i went into my computer there was no drives except c: drive and cd:drive no f:drive, and my ipod hasn't came back from the blankoffscreen

    1. computer
    2. local disk (C:)
    3. Program files (x86)
    4. Common files
    5. Apple
    6. Apple application support

    Then copy your downloaded blackra1n, paste it in there and then open ur blackra1n from there..U can also create a shortcut of it on your desktop for less hassel…ENJOY

  42. I erased the contents and settings from my iphone3gs accidentally. Now I couldn't get it reboot again. It cannot not even go to the front page of many icons. Every time I tried to run blackra1n, the phone will just show the picture of the face of a guy and many phones. After that, it will just freeze there. When I connected it with Iturns, it asked me to restore the phone. I did, but after that nothing happened. Can anyone help me?

  44. I have the iphone version 2.0.1, it was unlocked and jailbroken. I accidentally somehow unjailbroke the phone. I can still use the phone and texting and things, but I can't use any applications or ipod, and it isn't recognized in itunes. How do I jailbreak it again (i bought it that way before) so I can use everything again? Thanks!

    the day after i had to run blakra1n again because my phone died and Blackra1n did not work properly. the picture of the guy and the iphones flying is on the phone however it stays like that until it goes black then the apple logo appears then it says connect to itunes again. i do the same thing(run blacka1n) and it doesn't work anymore

    i did not upgrade, if i can i will wait for the os 4 to come out and then re jailbreak it so i dont care it i go to apples original firmware however if i restore and restart my phone it will be at 3.1.3 but it will not work as a phone because it needs to be unlocked and to unlock it it needs to be jailbroken.

    does anyone know what i can do.. is their a different software besides blackra1n that can help, if so please message back

  46. Please Help! I downloaded blackra1n soooooo many times. My computer say something about the asl.dll was not found. I hit ok, and Make it Ra1n pops up, but then closes out. I'm on vista, so i did the compatability, but it still doesnt help. PLEASE someone help me!

  49. Well, you need to install iTunes. Regarding Vista, just please try to run it in compatibility mode (right click on the blackra1n and through property make it run in windows xp)
