Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware with blackra1n

George Hotz (aka geohot), the kid who was the first to unlock the original iPhone back in 2007 and then iPhone 3GS in July of this year is back! This time he is the first one to release jailbreaking solution for the new iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware for all devices through his new tool called blackra1n. blackra1n is a software tool which can jailbreak (not unlock) all iPhone’s (iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS) and iPod touch’s (iPod touch 2G and 3G) running on firmware version 3.1.2. blackra1n is currently for Windows only, a Mac version of this app can be expected soon.

So, what is blackra1n? blackra1n is a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.

Follow the steps below to jailbreak all iPhone’s and iPod touches on OS 3.1.2:

Note for iPhone 3G and 3GS: Do NOT upgrade to iPhone 3.1.2 with blackra1n if you want to keep your unlock as doing so will result in upgrade of your baseband which will make it almost impossible for you to unlock.

Step 1: Download and install the latest version of iTunes (download link given below).

Step 2: You will now need to first update/restore to the original iPhone OS firmware 3.1.2 on your iPhone by using the latest version of iTunes. Download link for iPhone Firmware 3.1.2 is given at the end of the post.

Step 3: Download blackra1n for Windows (download link at the end of the post).

Step 4: Start blackra1n app. If you are on Windows 7 or Vista, run the app with “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by enabling it from the “Properties” tab to avoid any errors during the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Click on “make it ra1n”:

Step 6: Let the app do its thing and wait for the phone to automatically reboot.

Step 7: You should now have “blackra1n” in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run “blackra1n”, download Cydia and let it install it.

Step 8: Finally reboot your iPhone. Voila! You should now have fully jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch running on firmware 3.1.2.

  1. I'm getting the same problem as cookie8083. After the battery went flat, I'm unable to boot up the phone using blackra1n. It always show a black screen when I tether the phone and run the software. Is there any other way besides doing a restore?

  3. For me (iphone 3GS, 16gb, 3.1.2, FW 5.11.7)blackra1n worked fine for 3 months. Everytime it reboots I had to connect to mac and use blackra1n 'make it ra1n' and it comes up. I was okay with it until yesterday. Now it stopped coming up even with blackra1n. After geohot's image it just switchoff (nothing on the screen) and we have to press power button have something on the screen and that is nothing but the silver apple icon followed by connnect to i-tune logo ;-(

    I am unable to restore it with 3.1.2 ipsw as i-tune is not allowing it.

    Please help.

  5. I tried to update to 3.1.3 and jailbreak it but unfortunately i didn't manage to get it jailbroken so I updated back to 3.1.2 and jailbroke it again thanks to Blackra1n.

    My question now is: before I updated to 3.1.3, I made a backup with Itunes and i put the folder aside just in case. Can I still restore that folder so I can get all my apps and contacts back? If yes, how?

    I was thinking of going to recovery mode and then press the restore button but that would probably restore it and update it immediately to 3.1.3? OR if I hold “shift” + restore and then select the 3.1.2 firmware again..wouldn't that get rid of the jailbreak?

    Any help is appreciated!

  6. Unfortunately I’m in the same boat as you! 3g s 3.1.2 (custom fw used now stuck at silver pineapple or black screen.) Funny that this started for me to about four days ago as well…SOMEONE PLEASE HELP US!

  7. yo..you just need to press the home button and reset hold it for 10 sec ..to do hard reset…i have encounter this problem before.its solve .

  11. step 6, my phone reboots and says that SIM is locked and shit, cant open it. My phone is 3GS, and it was running on 3.1.2. After it went to shit and my computer didin't recognize it anymore, i tried to patch it through iTunes to 3.1.3, as it said that it is the only possible option. So, I waited for it to update, and here I am, SIM is locked. Can't open my phone, does anyone know how to help? Thanks in advance.

  15. HELP!! I restored my iPhone 3g with firmware 3.1.2 then Jailbroke and unlocked using BlackRa1n… Now iTunes WILL NOT recognize my iPhone. I have restored it over and over again…. but iTunes still says 'Cannot read iPhone “iPhone” please Restore Factory Settings on Summary Tab'… My phone works fine, but iTunes won't read it. It detects my iPhone, and comes up in Devices in the side pane of iTunes, but Windows Explorer does not recognize it… I wonder if iTunes can't read it because Windows Explorer can't? Like I said, iTunes sees it as an iPhone but cannot read it. I kinda want to put music on there, you know? How can I get iTunes to recognize it? I have tried uninstalling EVERYTHING Apple related on my computer, then reinstalling, still not working. I have tried different USB ports. HELP ME PLEASE!!!! Thanks in advance. Nina. 🙂

  17. hi, ugh i have a 2g jail broken iphone and 2 days ago i went to settings and re-setED all the setting, now my phone wont “officially” turn on. it just stays on the black screen with the pineapple. anyone can help me please? i let it sit there and it eventually died. i don't want to go to itunes and restore it cause its going to erase all my memory please contact me, i would really appreciate it grandly. jordandelgado23@yahoo.com

  19. dude, just run blackra1n again once its restarted and you'll be sweet. you need to run it TWICE to get it going properly… it says it on the pop up box…..

  20. I did an upgrade on my iphone and have now lost blackrain and cydia. I tried downloading blackra1n again and everytime i plug it into computer it says iphone needs to be restored which will mean i lose all my apps etc Has anyone else had this problem and if so how did you solve it please.

    I managed to successfully Jailbreak and Unlock my iPhone 3G using Blackra1n and the intructions above…thanks for that.
    One problem though…the apps that I download from The Apps Store do not seem to open properly. The icon appear on the screen as normal e.g. Facebook, but when i open it the screen goes black and after a second brings me back to the main menu again. Its the same with all the apps I just downloaded.

    any reason why? Should I restore 3.1.2 again and re-jailbreak?

  31. For some odd reason both my iphone 3gs got frozen and couldn't reboot. So I did a custom restore 3.1.2 and still at 5.11.07. When I check my firmware and all for the iphones, it says i'm still on 3.1.2 and 5.11.07 on both 3gs. When I go on cydia, it says i have 3.1.3 backed up but I know I backed up 3.1.2 on the white one, but it says 3.1.3. I installed the blackra1n via cydia. The wifi and bluetooth is doesn't work at all and the phone is constantly on search for service and when you push an icon, it takes a good 3 seconds before it loads the program. What the hell. I've tried everything and have tried redsnow, redownloaded 3.1.2 clean and did the pwnage and so on 6 rounds with both phones, but still no luck. I'm going crazy. I have been thinking about buying a factory unlocked 3gs here in bangkok, but it's $800 usd for a 16GB. I have heard rumors aobut he 4g iphone coming and I honestly would rather buy a ipad with that $800 bucks. Is there no solution? I heard that geo isn't going to work on the 3.1.3

So I did downloaded the blackra1n to unlock my iphone again (it was run out of battery) and would not start up again. but when I double click the balckra1n, It showed stop working because my WINDOW 7 does not have Adll.exe can any one help me out? btw. I also downloaded Adll.exe to my computer already too. and it had checked the compaility box for windows xp used too.

Hello ppl is there a way that i can unlock my 3gs phone for good as at the moment it is un lock from o2 to t mobile but not able to updates my itunes software if i do that then it will lock again.which i dont want to pay another £25! to un lock it! so is there a solution i di go to the shop & ask and they want to charge £60 to un limited jailbreak once this is done my ohone will never lock again and i can update it all the time on itunes.

  47. I think this is to do with the recent upgraded version of iTunes – try to get access to a computer with an older version (or downgrade your current iTunes if you're not worried about saved data)

  49. i jailbreak my iphone 3g yesterday using snowbreeze. my firmware is 3.1.3. after jailbreaking my phone is not getting any signal. it just says “no service”.
    but when i restore with itunes to original firmware then my network comes. can anybody help please
