Before there were hardware and soft, full-sized QWERTY keyboards for mobile devices, there was the good ol' alphanumeric keypad. Type Nine keyboard for iOS 8 is bringing back that experience to users who are actually hesitant of using smartphones, not just because of the whole touch experience, but because of the rather tricky QWERTY keyboard.
One of Cydia's most impressive and comprehensive power management systems for jailbroken devices has just been updated with support for iOS 8 / 8.1.
Cydia may be lauded as the most important tool in the broad mechanics that comprise the jailbreak scene, and in many respects, it is. But if you thought that a jailbreak + Cydia = all of the untethered jailbreaks you've enjoyed over the last few years, you'd perhaps be underestimating the contribution of several other key components. Cydia Substrate, for example, is a quiet workhorse that, without it, Cydia cannot properly work its magic, and with author Saurik having rolled out several key updates already since Pangu8 released over three weeks ago, a new version has just arrived featuring a myriad of improvements and enhancements. Details after the jump.
Google is known for doing some rather strange things, even if they eventually turn out to be brilliant. As with anything that's not quite the norm there are plenty of misconceptions about what jailbreaking is all about, how safe it is, and what it's used for. Fighting those misconceptions and legitimizing the practice of jailbreaking is never going to be easy.

The EFF has this week filed a petition to the Librarian of Congress and the Copyright Office to extend and expand the exemption that allows the jailbreaking of smartphones. The new petition will hopefully see tablets added to the current exemption.
