Apple’s AirTag Tracker To Reportedly Feature A Removable Battery

We’ve been expecting Apple to announce AirTag, its Tile-like tracker, for almost a year and we’re still waiting. But the tracker’s arrival is now closer than ever, with a report suggesting that it’ll be powered by a standard, removable battery.

Those who wondered whether AirTag would be rechargeable or need to be sent back to Apple to be replaced now have their answer, and it’s neither of those options.

From the looks of it, we can replace the batteries ourselves, and they’ll be the same CR2032 batteries that are used in all manner of mundane places, including digital scales. It also appears that the battery setup will be the same as the Tile Pro, the tracker that AirTag are likely to be based on.

We’ve also learned that the tags will likely feature a removable CR2032 coin cell battery like the Tile Pro. Based on a prototype of the tag, removing and replacing the battery will require unscrewing the back cover and performing a counter-clockwise twisting motion. The new battery must be inserted with the plus sign facing up.

The news that the AirTag’s batteries will be easily replaced is definitely welcome. Tile’s initial trackers couldn’t have their batteries replaced and instead had to be returned to the company. That just seems like a bad idea and one that Apple was never likely to entertain.

The real question we have now centers around when we can expect AirTag to be announced. Hopefully, we’ll hear something about them sooner rather than later.
