Apple Will Give iOS 15 Users Free Temporary Access To Additional iCloud Storage To Set Up New Devices

Apple has confirmed that iOS 15 will usher in a new feature that will see people able to use iCloud for a large system backup before switching to a new device, even if they don’t pay for iCloud storage.

Apple offers 5GB of iCloud storage free, but that isn’t enough to back up a full iPhone or iPad for most people.

With iOS 15, Apple will allow people to temporarily claim free iCloud space for up to three weeks, going them the time needed to set a new device up.

Now when you buy a new device you can use iCloud Backup to move your data to your new device, even if you’re low on storage. iCloud will grant you as much storage as you need to complete a temporary backup, free of charge, for up to three weeks. This allows you to get all your apps, data, and settings onto your device automatically.

The announcement came alongside the arrival of iCloud+, the renaming of paid iCloud tiers that will also include Hide My Email, custom domain support, and the VPN-like Private Relay feature.

All of this will be available when Apple ships iOS 15 to the world this fall. For now, it’s available in developer beta with a public beta taking place next month.
