Apple’s latest Apple TV 4K upgrades the CPU to an A15 Bionic among other things, and that new chip sees the device more able to compete with the Xbox and Playstation than ever before.
FlatpanelsHD has done a full review of the new Apple TV 4K, saying that the A15 Bionic is “much, much faster than previous-generation game consoles.”
The review name-checks the Xbox One and PS5, although the latter appears to be a typo and should actually be the PS4.
Perhaps most notable is the fact the A15 Bionic doesn’t have a fan attached to anything in the new model, whereas the old Apple TV 4K used an A12 Bionic that did have a fan. That might have led some to expect that there could be a throttling issue, but that hasn’t been the case in FlatpanelsHD’s review.
“… we were surprised to see A15 throttle less than A12 considering that it does not have active cooling. A 20-minute CPU stress test throttled A12 to 65% while A15 throttled to just 84%, meaning that the new Apple TV 4K can sustain most of its CPU performance during prolonged heavy loads in games,” the report notes.
Worth highlighting here is that games such as NBA, The Pathless and Sayonara Wild Hearts that exceed 150W of power consumption on PS5 draw 6W or less on Apple TV 4K (2022). Graphics and frame rate performance is significantly better on PS5 but in some cases it is the exact same game.
The performance of the A15 Bionic shouldn’t be all that surprising, but it does show that the new Apple TV 4K is more capable than ever when playing games from the App Store. Tests showed that the new box was a couple of seconds faster when loading NBA 2K3 and The Pathless and three seconds faster when loading Steel Sky.
The new Apple TV 4K is available to buy now in 64GB and 128GB configurations with prices starting at $129.
