Tesla’s Auto Shift Is Coming To All FSD Cars

There are a few things about the latest Model S that people are talking about right now, not least that yoke steering wheel.

But another feature that’s capturing attention is the Auto Shift feature — a feature that has the car automatically select the gear it things you want. That same feature is coming to all cars, says CEO Elon Musk — not just the Model S.

Musk says that any car that ships with the Full Self-Driving package will also support Auto Shift, although users will be able to disable the feature if they want to.

The Auto Shift feature allows the car to select the gear that it thinks the driver will want, although right now that’s limited to when the car comes out of Park.

That means that you won’t have the car automatically selecting reverse when you’re at an interchange, for example. So that’s good!

It isn’t yet clear whether existing cars will get the benefit of the Auto  Shift feature, however. Tesla’s new cars don’t come with gear selectors, but older ones already have them installed. With that in mind, it’s possible we will see cars do the selection themselves even when the gear selector stays in Park.

That just seems … weird.
