All hail the jaibreaking community! Whatever features Apple leaves out in iPhone / iPod touch / iPad are quite often made available on the respective iDevices after jailbreaking. One of the biggest missing things in iPhone for texting junkies, like yours truly, was the ability to send out text messages to groups / lists. This ability to send out texts en masse makes the process of sending out those wishes (like New Year, Eid, Christmas, Diwali) exceptionally easy on the other phones. Well, needless to say, it was never available on iPhones. But now you can with an called GroupSMS for jailbroken iPhones.
A new tweak which goes by the name of SecretSMS is now available for jailbroken iPhones which allows you to send secret SMS text messages to any mobile phone. Recipient wont be able to read the message until he or she knows the password for the encrypted message.
In light of the recent relaxed App Store restrictions, Apple has started allowing previously unallowed apps into their App Store. The biggest beneficiaries of the relaxed restrictions were Google Voice apps which weren't allowed before (since they duplicated features that iPhone comes with). We posted about two such apps: GV Connect and GV Mobile+. Both cost a very reasonable $2.99. But today, we have received information that GV Mobile+ is available for free just for today!
Just like we once proved that iMovie is possible on iPhone 3GS, only yesterday we posted a video which showed that running Game Center was actually possible on the older iPhone 3G. That, and of course, HDR photos on 3G and 3GS (with a somewhat complicated guide here).
A new tweak which goes by the name of “Covert” is now available on Cydia which brings private browsing to Mobile Safari browser on iPhone and iPod touch. When active, this feature will mask your browsing trail from anyone who might later use your phone to check out browser’s history, cookies and other data.
Competition is good. Real good. Android’s ‘openness’ and mighty sales seems to have finally effected the way Apple handles the App Store. The recently announced relaxed App Store restrictions and App Review Guidelines are now in action, readers!
If you haven't been living under a rock or something, you will know about the Google Voice app saga which probably led to increasing tensions between Apple and Google last year. Popular Google Voice clients for iPhone like GV Mobile, Voice Central and others were available earlier for a short period, but then they were soon removed by Apple from the App Store due to "duplicating features that the iPhone comes with (Dialer, SMS, etc)". Later, these apps were made available on Cydia for jailbroken iPhones.
Folders - that first came to iOS with version 4 - is a rather interesting way of handling apps on Springboard. Sure, other platforms (like Android, for instance) already had folders but once again, as with multitasking and copy-paste, Apple might have implemented the feature last but they also implemented it best.
Catchy headline, no?
While you won’t be ever able to run a full-blown modern desktop OS like Windows or Linux on your iOS gadget anytime soon, but with virtual-machining software Parallels Desktop for Mac, you can now access your Windows 7 or Linux-based virtual machines from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad!
First announced back at WWDC10, and then again at Apple’s Music Event on September 1st, Game Center is now live on iTunes on both desktops and iOS devices!
