Thanks to the recently released Evasi0n untether package, the jailbreak community has become alive with activity. More importantly, the package submissions to the default repositories in Cydia have become more frequent and of a higher quality, meaning that we should see some innovation injected back into the world of jailbreaking. SBCoders, makers of the popular Deck and Aero packages are also back in the public eye with the release of their latest premium package, Pages+.
The not-so-long-ago redesign of the Gmail app for iPhone and iPad made it much, much better than perhaps any other email client out there, and owing to the elegant, exquisite and functional layout, the app became my favorite email app for almost all my electronic communication needs. Considering that I use Gmail both for my work and my writing ambitions, I would rate the current version of the iOS Gmail variant even superior to its Android counterpart, which is surprising, consider that the latter is Google’s own brainchild. Nevertheless, these things happen, and there ain’t much that you can do about them.
Calling all Trekkies: your long wait for the next installment is now finally over! Well, that is of course, if you were waiting for the Star Trek app, which is now available for those on iOS and Android. Director J.J. Abrams’ next Star Trek release - Star Trek Into Darkness - is set to premiere in May, and in order to tide fans over until then, Paramount has launched an app offering a plethora of content as well as the chance to grab some prizes.
When the camera first met the mobile phone, it was seen as a gimmick, but nowadays, many consumers look for a snapper in some way representative of some of the higher-end standalones in terms of performance and quality. A vast portion of smartphone users can take high-resolution images and shoot video in full HD, and naturally, the amount of supplementary apps offering advanced editing features has soared over the past year or so. But while the likes of Instagram have managed to secure a solid user base, the popularity of video editing is comparatively low, and it's a trend music creation company UJAM wishes to buck with its VJAM offering.
If you're looking for an app to break from the generic, tried-and-tested mold, you needn't look much further than Compasso Synth by Rubyjock, which turns your iPhone's compass into a synthesizer. By tweaking the three main options - resonance/cutoff, LFO Rate, and oscillator detuning, you can produce some epic sounds, and each depends on which way you decide to tilt your device.
A new app from the audio/visual geniuses at THX promises to help budding home cinema enthusiasts to make the most out of the kit they've got, potentially taking their movie watching experiences to new heights in the process.
Facebook is the world’s largest social network for a reason. When the social network was first made public years back, no one could’ve predicted that it will leave the likes of MySpace, Orkut and Hi5 biting the dust, but the social giant did so. This did not happen overnight, either; steady updates and continuous improvements of the feature set took credit for the the website’s success. Whether Facebook sells users’ data or if it’s privacy policies are lax (to say the least), it’s no hidden fact that Facebook is the top choice for everyone out there for keeping in touch with friends, sharing the ups and downs of their life and almost every other aspect of daily routines.
Although we haven't seen a large number of impressive and innovative tweaks landing in the Cydia store for a while, something tells us that the jailbreak development scene is about to receive a new lease of life in the coming weeks and months. The PhotoFilter package that will be available from the BigBoss repository may not offer anything we haven't seen before in third-party apps, but it is definitely a worthwhile purchase for those who are into photography, filters, and love producing aesthetically pleasing images.
While Apple provides a native weather app on all of its iOS devices (except the iPad), it's fair to say that it's not particularly riveting. It does what it says on the tin - offers current and 5-day weather for just about any area of the world, but it’s up to third-parties to add a little finesse and grandeur to proceedings. While plenty of small app houses have done just that, today’s aesthetically-pleasing offering arrives courtesy of a rather unlikely source. AOL, famed former owner of Bebo, has been busy preparing its SKYE Weather+Photo app for those running on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and unlike the aforementioned investment, it really isn't bad. In fact, it's rather good.
Smartphones can, and for many people do help maintain a level of organization.
