At the Display Week conference in San Francisco this week, Samsung Electronics showed off some progression in screen technology for the consumer tech market. Hidden away amongst the new Smart TV sets, smartphones and desktop monitors, was a stunning 4K UHD 5.5-inch smartphone display intended for use in virtual reality.

With the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge living up to its hype, Samsung has also announced a new Gear VR Innovator Edition headset for the new phones. We take a close look at the contraption, right after the jump.

Samsung doesn’t like to be left out when it comes to emerging technologies, and as a part of its exhibition of new launches at IFA in Berlin, the Korean outfit has taken the wraps off the Gear VR headset. We already got a glimpse of the device a week or so ago, which somewhat spoiled the surprise, but nevertheless, Sammy is gunning for a bit of the market currently being pursued by companies ranging from Facebook to Sony, and below, we’ve got all of the info.

There’s scarcely an area of the mobile industry that Samsung has not touched upon, with the company having already delivered multiple smartwatches since launching the Galaxy Gear last year. With Google Glass gathering steam ahead of its release early next year and Facebook having recently acquired Oculus’s VR technology, Samsung is angling for a piece of the pie with a virtual reality headset of its own, and apparently, the so-called Gear VR will be showcased at IFA.
